There are few corners of Britain where a bicycle and a landscape agree so completely. The Somerset Levels are almost entirely flat — a broad, low patchwork of peat moor, wet meadow and willow bed lying between the Quantocks and the Mendips, threaded by slow rivers and a lattice of drainage ditches known locally as rhynes (pronounced "reens").
What that means for a cyclist is simple: no hills to speak of, lane after lane of near-empty tarmac, and a horizon so wide you can watch the weather coming for miles. It is terrain that rewards the unhurried. You will not need a racing bike, a training plan or any particular appetite for suffering. A decent hybrid with 32mm tyres, a spare tube and a bit of lunch will do nicely.
The ride described here is a rough figure of eight based on Langport, running out across the moor to Burrowbridge and back through the villages on the southern edge of the Levels. It comes in at around 25 miles (40km) with perhaps 60 metres of climbing in total — most of it the short drag up onto the ridge at Curry Rivel.
Roll out of Langport over the bridge and follow the lane east towards Muchelney. Within a mile you are already out among the withy beds — pollarded willows grown for basket-making, still cut on a rotation in places, their pale stems standing up like bundles of kindling. The ruined abbey gatehouse at Muchelney is worth a ten-minute detour; the village itself is tiny, quiet and largely car-free.
From Muchelney, the lane runs dead flat to Drayton and then climbs gently onto the ridge at Curry Rivel, the only real ascent of the day and mercifully short. Drop down the other side and you are back on the moor, heading for Burrow Mump — a curious, conical hill rising abruptly out of the flatness with a ruined chapel on top. Leave the bike at the gate and walk up; the view back across the Levels towards Glastonbury Tor is the best on the whole route.
From Burrowbridge, follow the riverbank lanes north-east through Stathe and on towards North Curry, then turn south through Fivehead and Swell to close the loop back to Langport. The final miles are almost entirely downhill or flat, usually with a tailwind if you have timed it well.
The Levels are one of the great wetland wildlife landscapes of lowland England, and the beauty of travelling by bike is that you arrive silently. Bring binoculars if you have room.
Flat does not mean easy. The Levels are wide open and the wind can be relentless, so plan your direction accordingly — most riders prefer to head east in the morning and let the prevailing south-westerly push them home. Check the wind forecast before you set off, not after.
Burrowbridge has a village pub beside the Mump that does a solid lunch and a decent pint of local cider — the perfect midpoint stop. Langport has a few more options, including a bakery and a couple of cafés on Bow Street. For a slower trip, there is abundant self-catering and B&B accommodation in Langport, Somerton and the villages around Curry Rivel, most of it happy to take a cyclist and a muddy bike.
Ride it in a day if you must, but the Levels repay a weekend. Stay two nights, start early, and give yourself permission to stop every time something moves in the reeds. That, more than any mileage, is what this landscape is really for.
